To measure the speed of a target, the radar must emit radar waves and aim the beam at the moving or departing target. When the radar beam contacts the target, a portion of the beam energy will return to the radar antenna. The returned beam contains frequency shift information generated when the target moves, and the value of the frequency shift is proportional to the speed of the target's motion. This is the so-called Doppler effect. Radar can obtain the corresponding speed of a target by measuring changes in frequency.

As shown in the figure, when the radar is installed at a height of about 10 feet (3 meters) above the water surface, the radar beam forms an elliptical beam area with a diameter of about 2 feet (61 centimeters) on the water surface. When measuring water surface velocity, please remember this correspondence when considering the width of the river.
